Academic Prof. Dr. Almir Badnjević, PhD.
BIOGRAPHY
He is one of the founders of the idea to include medical devices with measuring functions in the legal metrological framework and to establish measurement monitoring in medical measurements on a global level. Based on this idea, he founded one of the most equipped laboratories for testing and verification of medical devices in Europe, the Verlab laboratory, in 2014. Verlab’s primary task is to annually verify the safety and performance of medical devices in healthcare institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the international ISO 17020 standard. Drawing from his experience in this field, he co-authored the book “Inspection of Medical Devices – for Regulatory Purposes,” published by Springer Nature in 2017, with the second edition released in 2023.
In 2022, Verlab company established the first scientific research institute in Bosnia and Herzegovina named the “Verlab Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Medical Devices, and Artificial Intelligence.” In less than a year, the Institute has established cooperation with institutions such as CERN, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, and participated in several international projects in the fields of high-performance computing, big data, artificial intelligence, and medical devices. The Verlab Institute is a candidate to become a global center for cooperation with the WHO.
In his academic career, since 2015, he has been working as the head of the Department of Genetics and Bioengineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Natural, and Medical Sciences of the International Burch University. He initiated the first master’s and doctoral programs in bioengineering in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the International Burch University, he holds the title of full professor in the field of bioengineering and electrical engineering, while at the University of Sarajevo, he holds the title of associate professor in the field of health informatics. Since 2015, he has also been working as a practice expert at the University of Warwick (UK). He is the author or co-author of over 200 chapters in books, books, articles in journals, and articles from international conferences. He is listed among the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists by Stanford University (USA).
He was elected as a full member of the International Academy of Science and Art of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a full member of the European Academy of Science and Art in 2022, while in 2023, he became a member of the World Academy of Arts and Science. In 2022, he was appointed as the editor-in-chief of the journal “Technology and Health Care” published by the Dutch IOS Press, as well as an assistant editor-in-chief in the journals Health and Technology and Biomedical Engineering Online published by Springer Nature.
In addition to the academic and business sectors, he gained professional experience through non-governmental organizations. In 2014, as one of the founders, he initiated the Society for Medical and Biological Engineering in BiH, which represents BiH in the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES), and was elected as president. In 2021, this Society established LabHab, which became an EU DIH (European Digital Innovation Hub). Since 2015, this Society, for the first time in the history of the country, has organized the International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering (CMBEBIH), which brings together about 700 participants from 40 countries every two years. Since 2016, he has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Technical Committee for Cardiovascular Systems of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), while since 2020, he has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors for IEEE Standards.
He was appointed as a member of the International Division of Clinical Engineering (CED) Committee of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) for the period from 2018 to 2024, and as an advisor for Regulatory Affairs of the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) for the period from 2018 to 2022. He served as a coordinator for IEEE standards for Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, Africa) from 2019 to 2020. Additionally, he was appointed as a member of the Supervisory Board of Privredna banka Sarajevo d.d. Sarajevo for the term 2019 to 2027. Since 2021, he has been appointed as a distinguished lecturer for IEEE EMBS. He holds the Senior Member status in IEEE.

In 2018, his team was awarded the IFMBE Award for the best work in the field of clinical engineering on a global level, while in 2021, Verlab received the team award from IFMBE in the field of clinical engineering. SNL magazine named him the Personality of the Year in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2018, while in 2020, Ladies In magazine declared him the IN man, and he was recognized as the CD Personality by national Face TV in 2020.
The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina appointed him as the director of the Agency for Identification Documents, Records, and Data Exchange of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the term 2023-2028.
